Turn off from the N2 after Swellendam on the R319 to the Southern Coast known for its many beaches, shipwrecks, sharks, whales and a new, fresh, uncomercialised wine route and the prestine De Hoop Nature Reserve. You travel inland to the one-time rebellious colony town of Swellendam. Heading south, make for the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape L’Agulhas now proudly boasting its own wine route. Lunch at the 19th Century lighthouse. The coastline in this area is infamous for the numerous sailors’ lives it has claimed. The ship-wreck museum in Bredasdorp, the only one of its kind in the world, that commemorates the many ships that fell foul of the turbulent currents and razor sharp rocks. Visit Elim a unique historical village, situated halfway on the dirt-road from Gansbaai to Bredasdorp. Elim an original Moravian Mission station has a working water mill, built in 1833, the largest wooden water wheel in South Africa and a Slave Memorial commemorating the liberation of slaves in the Cape. Extend your visit to Hermanus (the Whale Capital of South Africa).
