Garden Route
Forests, beaches, birds, golf and sailing the spectacular Garden Route is known as ‘the Eden of South Africa’ thanks to the lush vegetation. A rugged coastline, indigenous forests, waterfalls and long beaches of white sand are found all along the route.
The world’s highest bungee jump (216 metres) is situated at the Bloukrans Bridge near the Tsitsikamma Forest and Coastal National Park.
The scenic “Garden” from George or Oudtshoorn through Knysna is probably the best known route because of its lush vegetation, bird-life, lakes and lagoons, coastline and many leisure activities. The towns of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are ideal places to stay and Capetonians and foreign visitors often make an annual pilgrimage to these beautiful spots.
Knysna, the capital of the Garden Route, is a quaint seaside village on a protected lagoon. The town is known for the yellow-wood forest and fresh-water oysters and is a favourite holiday destination. Experience a cruise on the lagoon to the Featherbed Nature Reserve, or just enjoy a leisurely amble amongst the many arts and craft shops for which this area is known.
Plettenberg Bay further along the coast with long stretches of pristine white beaches is the home of the Dolphin Studies and Research Centre.
Tsitsikamma National Park is a pristine coastal area with endless beaches and bays. The area is very popular with nature lovers, hikers and fisherman. Oyster Bay is a beautiful private Coastal Reserve set on 235 hectares and incorporates magnificent dunes, woods, river deltas, beaches, wetlands and lagoons and is conveniently situated between Knysna and Port Elizabeth.
St Francis Bay, the Eastern Gateway to the Garden Route lies only 100km west of Port Elizabeth and is known for its endless stretches of pristine beaches and a surfers paradise.
